It's Columbus Day Weekend and you know what
means All roads lead to Miami for the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami
Before we head south for fun, sun and most
importantly relaxation, I want to update you on a few things,
and feature some of the things taking place in Miami that we
will be checking out.
Free at last...Free at last...Thank God
Almighty Mychal Bell is somewhat Free at Last!!!! I'm sure
by now everyone is aware of the good news regarding Mychal Bell,
one of the "Jena 6". On Thursday, September 27th Mychal Bell's bail was
set for $45,000, and his family had the funds available (possibly through
therefore he was released from jail on this said day - Thursday, September 27th,
2007. It was also announced that he will be tried as a
juvenile in this "Jena 6" case. Come on
people...In my opinion, this young man has served time, since he
has been in an adult jail for almost a year!
You see above I have used the
words "somewhat free", that's because Mr. Bell is now
under house arrest. This is crazy...don't you
think??? Could someone
out there explain to me why this
young man is under house arrest, I don't get the logic behind
this decision. Correct me if I'm wrong when I state, isn't bail set so that an individual do not flee?
Then why more punishment of being under house arrest?
His bail has been paid, and that takes care of him fleeing. I don't quite understand
this at all. Someone, please explain why, and why this
young man even though he is out of the adult prison is still
experience this injustice.
Anyway, on a brighter note
we are very glad he is at home with his family!!!
Of course racial and
negative things are still being said and are being done.
One of the two most sickening is regarding a statement the
Louisiana DA Reed
Walter made at a press conference last week prior to Mychal being
released, which was very disturbing to me. I don't have
the full statement but it goes something like this "...I
firmly believe and am confident of the fact that had it not been for the
direct intervention of the
Lord Jesus Christ last Thursday, surly a disaster would have
happened..." Dear Lord, Mr. Walter speaks about
the peaceful demonstration and all the demonstrators (black people in particular)
as if they don't know how to behave, that they/we
are not peaceful people This is quite offensive to me. Why
I ask one should make such a statement to take away from the
positiveness that occurred in Jena? Why I ask is he so
outwardly racist? It's getting to a point that he/they
cannot contain their hatefulness and can't help from publicly
belittle black folks. Clearly, they absolutely have no
respect and have no love in their hearts for black people. Also, the 2nd most
important is police officers in Louisiana have begun to harass
young black men, it is reported they are pulling young black men
over with bogus stories, so that they can run checks on
This racial tension is clearly building and I
understand lots are happening around the US. I pray that
we all are safe through these rough times.
We heard a brief interview with BET's
Executive Debra Lee on the Michael Baisden show last week and we were very
UNHAPPY with her statements. Yes, we agree that it's not
cool to protest in front of anyone's home. However in this
case Ms. Lee via her interview said nothing to the fact of
CHANGE. It's clear that she feels what they are doing
regarding BET's programming is
right. As Todd stated to me which I must agree with is "indeed we are aware of the negative
stereotypes, but we don't need to see it nor do our children need to be
exposed to it". So in our opinions my brothers
and sisters...PROTEST ON....LET IT CONTINUE UNTIL THERE IS
CHANGE at !!!
Rev. Delman L. Coates
Today we got an
update from the "Enough is Enough Campaign" and we
would like to share it with you. It seems the protest
which took place last Saturday (9/28/07) was a success. We
were also told that the next rally is scheduled to take place
this Saturday, October 6th, and will continue every weekend
until the network stops airing "demeaning and offensive
portrayals of black people". We applaud Rev. Delman
L. Coates of the Mount Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton Maryland,
and the "Enough is Enough Campaign" members for their
hard work. Please keep up the fight for change!!!

and there you will able to view the videos.

chant "Lift Us Up, Don't Tear Us Dooowwwnnn! Lift Us Up,
Don't Tear Us Down!"
A Special Update
from "Enough is Enough Campaign"
Everything for our third rally went
extremely well. Another 500 people were out with
us. Many more neighbors in the neighborhood seemed
to come out to find out what all the fuss was about.
We gave them brochures to let them know why we were
in their neighborhood. Rev. Coates was on the
Michael Baisden Show twice this week (Monday and Friday)
to talk about the campaign and our weekly rallies.
On Tuesday, Baisden announced on air that he would
be at yesterday's rally. By Thursday, however, he
had changed his mind. He shared with Rev. Coates
on air that he made an agreement with Debra Lee that if
she came on his show, he would not rally outside
her house. She was on the show on Thursday.
We were also joined by a bus from New York City.
On October 13, we will start Enough Is Enough rallies in
New York City at a SURPRISE location to be announced.
Everyone in the NYC area should stay tuned. We
realize that we haven't done a good job of getting video
up of the last two rallies. We are going to work
on this. Everyone in the DC area should come out
and join us each Saturday at 1PM.
On Tuesday evening, we also had a great rally outside
the BET reception for the Congressional Black Caucus at
the OYA Restaurant & Lounge in DC. It was great!!!
Many who attended expressed approval for the campaign
(even if they won't or can't say so publicly). The
artist Talib Kweli and Professor Cornel West came over
to encourage the group to continue its efforts
(although, Dr. West did express some concern about
rallying outside Debra Lee's residence). BET has
been using the location of the rallies to distract
people from the real issue. They continue to
ignore and avoid the issue of the content of their
programming. In her Thursday interview with
Michael Baisden, Ms. Lee avoided Baisden's challenge
about the content on the network by commenting on the
"new programming" they are unveiling on
their Sunday schedule. In his Friday
interview, Rev. Coates informed Baisden that no one has
been complaining about BET's Sunday line up, and that
she completely ignored the issue of the content and
messages of many of the videos and programs they air
during the week.
Again, we'll try to get more video up on the site of our
weekly rallies. We do apologize. Spread The
Enough Is Enough
now talk about some fun stuff. We are finishing up our itinerary for our annual Miami excursion
this weekend. So if you are heading there "give
us a holla". Last year we diverted from the norm
for a bit with all the Caribbean stuff we do, and did a
lot more tourist stuff. So this year we will stick with
almost the same agenda as last year.
Friday night you can find us chilling at the 400 Club in South Beach
with host "J Little" and his crew. It should be
exciting because Trey Songz will be in the house at his album
release party. Earlier in the evening we will definitely
pass through Mangos for a bite to eat and some drinks. We are so
looking forward to checking these out.
Saturday we have no solid plans yet, but maybe a Soca
show. Definitely during the daytime we will be relaxing on the
beach. Hummmmm...maybe we can pull together a naked party
on Haulauver Beach, that might be cool...LOL!!! Not really
"down" with the whole nude thing, but if you want to
chill on this clothing optional beach hit us
up. Coming to think of it...there are lots to drink there as well
via mobile bars (if my memory serves me correctly). Of
course this is one sure way to relax: with drinks, the sounds of
the waves as the beautiful blue/green water splashes back and
forth, the smell of the salt water and not to mention the
sunset. Yup, that will be
Sunday, both Carnivals are taking place Miami and Broward.
We intend to try and make it to both. We definitely have
to support our friends from Orlando "BIC Sounds" who
will be in the Broward Carnival this year. So, if time
permits we will be "hitting" both events.
Miami Caribbean Carnival
(The 23rd Anniversary Celebration) is taking place at
Bicentennial Park in Downtown Miami, Florida on Sunday, October
parade begins at 12:00 Noon at NE 2nd Avenue and will travel to
NE 27th Street and into the park where Allison Hinds, Iwer
George, Mighty Shadow, GailAnn, along with a host of artists scheduled to
perform. Click the flyer above for all the details or log
on to their site. For all the Carnival weekend activities
and party information, you can obtain it from the Miami
Carnival site as well www.miamicarnival.net
or call 305-653-1877.
Broward Caribbean Carnival in Ft.
Lauderdale Florida, which as we all must know by now IS ON!
Yippy!!!! It is scheduled to take place
at Ft. Lauderdale Stadium Event Site located at 1301 NW 55th
Street, Ft. Lauderdale Florida. Lots
of artists are scheduled to perform, and there are a number
of masquerade bands taking part including some from our
area. Click the flyer above for all the details and
directions to the Carnival site, or log on to their site at www.caribbeancarnival.org
the jumping, "liming" and some "wining" during the daytime, in our opinion there
is no other place to go but to the Mixx Productions Fete in
South Beach (the flyer can be found under our "Featured
Events"). Mixx Productions and
their entire crew are from our area here in Washington DC, and
their Miami party is always nice, so if you have no plans, then
you must check this out.
on Monday on our way to Orlando we intend to stop in at the Soca
Cowboys and Cowgirls fete. To all our Orlando friends we
will be passing through for a day, so we will try to visit
everyone of you (if time permits). Definitely, we'll be
doing lunch at Bahama Breeze on "I-Drive", so if any
of you are free please join us, and we also ask if anyone among
our on-line family will be passing through Orlando to give us a
"Shout", we would love for you to join us for lunch.
Since you will be in Florida and if you are able to, why don't
you go ahead and extend your trip so you can check out the Last
Carnival of the Season - Jacksonville Caribbean Carnival
produced by COOJI. This will be taking place in
Jacksonville Florida beginning on Thursday, October 11th,
climaxing with the Parade on October 13th, and cooling down with
it's last lap party on October 14th. There are lots of
events scheduled to take place and of course lots of
performers. Click the flyer above for details or scroll
down to our "Featured Events".
