WHAT'S HAPPENING By: Todd Mangatal

Greetings To All:

The Entertainment Group Inc Celebration (WIRM 35th Anniversary)

First, I would like to start by commending Barry Hillocks from The Entertainment Group Inc. on a job well done on the 35th Anniversary Celebration of West Indian Record Mart (WIRM) with the "For The Love Of It Concert/Tour".  I know Barry put a lot of work and time into this production, and his work paid off because the event was a "CLASS ACT".  All of the artists in the line-up were there, and did a great job (Bares was "out of sight" as usual), the venue was perfect (I don't think there was a bad seat in the place).  One thing that really impressed me with the venue (Show Place Arena) was the drink prices, they had beers starting for less than $3.00 and no higher than $3.50, unlike most arenas where the drinks, food and parking are normally outrageously priced (parking was also free and there were plenty of it.)  I understand the Caribbean food sold out on numerous occasions (which was obvious because throughout the evening the line was never-ending.)  Big up to Juicy on the food!  The turnout wasn't bad, but not as outstanding as we all had anticipated, which was unfortunate because many of you missed the first quality Caribbean concert to take place in the DC area in a long time.  I'm sure this will be a sign to many promoters in the area to be careful because the support just doesn't seem to be there for quality Caribbean shows, which saddens me!!!  I guess we are all just happy standing in the hot sun at venues, or cramped into dark halls or night clubs, where the show begins at all kinds of "crazy" outrageous hours.  This place was ideal as far as seating, drinks, quality of the production, and organization.  BIG UP and Maximum Respect to The Entertainment Group, Inc., for a job very well done, and look out for their upcoming events.  There will be lots of big things coming out of their camp in the future.  Actually, they recently launched a new event called "Tropical Thursdays" (the hottest mix of Dancehall Reggae, Hip Hop and Reggaeton) at Kili's Kafe.  I understand this is going quite well, so check them out on Thursday nights at Kili's.  Scroll down to the ads for more details or check their site www.theentertainmentgroupinc.com

Out of curiosity please let me know how the "For the Love Of It Tour" is doing in other cities.  I think they will be in St. Petersburg, Florida at Janis Landing this weekend (which is a very nice place to see a show, I've had some real good times there.)  Anyway, I know it was a sell out in NY at Madison Square Garden, and I know it hit Philly last Saturday.  Let me know how the show was in your city todd@ariousentertainment.com

By the way, The Entertainment Group, Inc. is organizing a Caribbean Family Reunion™ which will take place in September, the location will be announced. This will be an outdoor event that's intended to bring all the people of Caribbean heritage together for a day of celebration.  It will also be a day to expose local entertainment and DJs.  Barry says he intends to have entertainment for the whole family that will not only be entertained, but will be educated as well through workshops such as Steel Pan, Arts and Crafts, etc.  Hit Barry back on his site www.theentertainmentgroupinc.com and let him know if you think this is a good idea and is something we need in the Baltimore/Washington Area.  If you would like to volunteer or vend let him know as well.  His e-mail address is info@theentertainmentgroupinc.com.

The Miss Caribbean U.S. Pageant in Philadelphia this weekend!!!

For those of you in the Philly area, this Saturday is the 4th Annual Miss Caribbean US Beauty Pageant, where they will be crowning Miss Caribbean U.S.  This is an event that needs your support.  Be sure to check it out and hit me back and let me know how it was.  Ms. Yolanda Wallace and her group have been working very hard for the last year to pull together this exciting event, so again, please go out and support her and this wonderful event.  For more information log on to www.misscaribbean.us.

The mysterious death of Ron Brown

Let me mention something that is thought provoking.  Yesterday, on my favorite radio program/show (Joe Madison show on WOL am 1470 or XM "The Power")  I was enlightened by a discussion by Joe Madison, Dick Gregory, Walter Fontroy and an author of a book on the mysterious death of Ron Brown where they were discussing the (possible) mysterious assassination of Mr. Ron Brown the head of the Democratic party during the Clinton era.  It was reported several years ago that Mr. Brown's plane crashed, but later reports started surfacing that he was assassinated.  From the time my wife and I heard about Mr. Brown's death, we knew he was assassinated, and yesterday we had proof that our feelings may have been right.  A new book was just released on this mysterious killing of Mr. Ron Brown.  I haven't checked out this book yet, but from the discussion by these gentlemen it seems all the answers are in the book, so you must check it out.  I believe it is called "Ron Brown's Body.

2004 DC Caribbean Carnival

Things here in the DC area are starting to heat up!!!!!  DC Carnival is right around the corner and by popular demand the Carnival goes back to it's original home on Georgia Avenue.  Last year the Carnival had the opportunity to re-locate downtown DC between the US Capitol and the White House.  This took place because of the tremendous growth of this event.  However, since so many of the supporters felt that moving the Carnival took it out of the Caribbean community, the organizers spent the last year in negotiations with many agencies within DC, and they decided logistically it would be possible to bring the carnival back home.  This year the Carnival will start at Georgia and Missouri Avenues, N.W. and continue along a 2.5 mile route to the judging point, and then down to "De Savannah" at Banneker Park.  There are lots of excitement around here with the many band launchings and fetes.  We should have more information on which bands will be participating next week.  Also, look out for DC Carnival's 1st Annual Big Fete which will take place on Saturday, June 26th at Kili's Kafe, I understand the Soca Train man "Maximus Dan", and the Invasion Crew (Fay-Ann, Naya and Iwer), will be there along with many others, the full line-up will be announced soon (so stay tuned).  Also kicking off on Saturday, June 12th and every Saturday until Carnival will be DC Caribbean Carnival Inc. "Countdown to DC Carnival".  This will also take place at Kili's Kafe, which is 2 blocks from "De Savannah", so this should get you in the mood for Carnival 2004.  Vending booths are still available and ad space in their commemorative magazine is still available (but going fast).  Check their site for more details www.dccaribbeancarnival.com or smangatal@dcccinc@hotmail.com or scroll down and view the Carnival events.
