WHAT'S HAPPENING by Todd Mangatal

Greetings To all, my on-line family:

Happy Independence to Trinidad and Tobago (August 31, 2004)!

I want to start off by letting you know how very pleased we are regarding all your comments from our last weeks’ commentary about Beenie Man being removed from the MTV Video Awards Concert, and why this took place.  Thank you for all the fabulous comments!  One sister in particular was an advocate for the banning of Buju Bantan’s music several years ago, and she pointed out some important facts.  Most importantly, she was very sorry she had done this because it ruined Buju’s career.  She and others have stated that this thought (hating this particular group) have been the culture in Jamaica for a very long time, so basically they are singing about what they know and have been taught throughout the years.  Yes, I am completely aware of this (which is an important fact), and I’ve always been saddened by what Buju has experienced (an artist whom I’ve enjoyed from the beginning of his career and still very much do), but that still doesn’t make it right!  Remember just a few years ago it was the culture in America to enslave, lynch, and oppress black people, but if the people and the advocates didn’t stand up against this, it would still be the culture today.  It’s not right for anyone to judge anyone whose not directly harming them!  Again, thanks for all your comments!

Saturday Night the Messenger (Luciano) was in town performing and he certainly delivered "The Message".  For those who were uncertain about things in their life and was looking for the answers, you must have found them.  Wow, the vibes I constantly talk about was certainly in the place that night and it was right! My wife and all our friends indicated to me that I must have been in heaven since the aroma was definitely in the place as well, but I had a cold and didn't experience this.  Imagine Mary was chilling and hanging out with me that night, but I was too stuffed up to pay her any attention!  Anyway, everything about this show was wonderful, Dean Frazier blew his heart out, he is such a talented sax player, the "The Far East Singers" (Lucie’s back up singers) were great, and so was Mikey General.  Luciano took the stage and did a wonderful performance.  He sang the many hit tunes he had released over the years, and every one of them he delivered very well.  I'm a little disappointed that he didn't sing our favorite "Long Story". Additionally, I was a little disturbed though, because throughout the night a few folks walked up to me and "messed up my vibe" by stating they were bored, how on earth can anyone be bored listening to Luciano?  Clearly, they didn't' receive his message, and never found the answers…what a pity!!!  My wife and I, as usual were completely entertained, and were touched by his conscious and uplifting music.  Again, I ask how could these positive lyrics not touch someone's soul?  The lyrics and messages in his music definitely come from a higher power.  If you hear Luciano is coming to your town run out and see this positive reggae artist, it will be well worth it.

Earlier on Saturday evening we also attended the Caribbean Connection "Night of Fashion" and that too was a wonderful event.  I must say the talent in this area is outstanding.  The fashions were nice, but the talent that was exposed at this event was really great.  They had a dance group (girls between the ages of 10 and 11) who performed, and these young ladies put on a wonderful performance, they were so full of energy.  They impressed my wife greatly.  There were many other performances that impressed us, poetry written and performed by a young lady from our community Ms. Leslie St. Julien who did a great job, as well as Ms. Jennifer Hubert direct from NJ who performed 2 skits (Paul Keens Douglas).  The finale of the show was hearing the sounds of Naima and the "Frontline Band".  Naima did her poetry to the sounds of "Frontline".  Look out for Naima and this new band; they are going to do big things.  For those who attended this event, Caribbean Connection's President Beverlee Dawkins along with all its members, and we at Arious thank you tremendously!

Sunday we were in attendance of a private show of the Youth Choir Jeunes Agape, and once again they did a great job. We understand their performance on Tuesday (August 31st) at the Kennedy Center was excellent, and the support was overwhelming.  Thanks to all in our community who came out and attended this wonderful Kennedy Center show.

This weekend is all about New York (Labor Day) Caribbean Carnival, held in Brooklyn (The largest Caribbean Carnival in North America).  Unfortunately, I did not receive much information on all the events (I guess the promoters were very busy), but Mr. Trini Wilt one of our on-line family indicated that the following link lists many of the Carnival events.  Please log on to this site for many of the festivities http://www.carnivalpower.com.  We intend to check out some of the events, along with “J’Ouvert” and the Carnival parade.  Enjoy NY Carnival, and be safe!!!!

Until Next Week!
